About this role

If you have strong technical problem solving and analytical skills, are highly motivated by working in an operational environment providing high value service delivery with a real customer focus then we are looking for Software Support Engineer to join our highly committed team supporting BTs  Data Retention Capabilities.

The ideal candidate must have previous Oracle SQL / PL/SQL and good understanding of UNIX shell scripting. Knowledge of JAVA  and ETL tools like Streamsets ,ODI  etc is desirable.

As live system support and maintenance there will be a strong synergy with the development teams, as part of the Dev Ops processes, and an expectation that standards will be driven up by the candidate.

You'll have the following responsibilities

Core activities

  • Individual contributor, providing  second line support to solve production issues
  • Out of office on call support for critical issues.
  • Debug, test  in Oracle PLSQL, shell and ETL tools.
  • Performance tuning and code fixes.

Key / unique decisions made by this role:

  • Decide what work needs to be done to resolve production support issues.
  • Influence allocation of tasks within Dev Ops teams according to priority (often as a collective decision).
  • Decide implementation approaches, and manage the associated risks/issues within the area's chosen standards to fulfil the requirements of the solution.
  • Decide when to call for peer/supplier technical reviews, and when to escalate any issues from delivery reviews or service which effects incidences to the appropriate person e.g. Account Manager, TDM, and Expert Software Engineer.
  • Decide when the overall solution developed by the team is ready to deploy.

Problem solving:               

  • Solve problems with components delivered by the development team
  • Integration between systems; in-life deployment; and non-functional issues.
  • Facilitate the team to scope the problem and determine a possible range of solutions.
  • Take ownership of problems which have a significant risk to a team’s delivery.
  • Change management
  • Perform impact analysis for planned and unplanned changes, including changes to cost, resource and functionality.
  • Within a team, lead and implement changes to the ways of working. Responsible for assuring technical changes that go into production.

Measure of success:

  • Ensure the software delivered has met all the production quality standards
  • Setting good practices using SRE principles.
  • Building good knowledge base to facilitate other team members supporting the applications.
  • Meeting the goals and standards set for the Inlife team.
  •  Participating in Internal and external audits as needed.
  • Coach other members of the team.

You'll have the following skills & experience

Technical Skills:

     Application Support Experience

     Oracle SQL, PL/SQL.

     Unix Shell Scripts & 

     Java & ETL tools  ( Streamsets / ODI etc ) - desirable

     Bigdata tools and technologies - desirable

Problem Solving: The ability to identify, investigate and resolve problems through gathering the necessary information, formulating and verifying hypothesis, determining the root cause(s) and selecting and implementing the appropriate solution.

Communication Ability: Able to express ideas, explanations or opinions in a way that is appropriate to the situation, understandable to audience and demonstrating a constructive, assured and non-confrontational manner.
