Openreach’s Ethernet and Optical portfolio (aka ‘leased lines’) underpins some 15% of overall Openreach revenue. The products are used by our communication providers to connect business customers and data centres, for mobile cell site connectivity to power 5G, and to provide the network capacity for consumer broadband services across the UK. In each of these markets – business connectivity, mobile, infrastructure – we are facing competition like never before. It is vital for Openreach that our Ethernet and Optical portfolio remains competitive in this evolving market context, and continues to create value for our customers and for Openreach, so positioning us for growth. This role will be key to ensuring that happens.
You'll have the following responsibilities
- Fully understand and be accountable for a key product/product area within the portfolio. Understand customer use cases for the product, the product value proposition, the product cost stack and pricing, the product contract and its obligations for Openreach and our customers, the relevant regulation for the product. Understand product revenue targets and service KPIs, and ongoing performance against those.
- Commercially assess opportunities for new products and capabilities, looking at costs vs benefits, and making recommendations to develop or not. These opportunities could include formal industry requests (SORs), internally-generated ideas from within the CCP org or wider Openreach service and operations functions, or equipment vendors.
- Create compelling business cases for recommended product developments, including detailed cost/benefit analysis. Ensure senior stakeholder support and buy-in, and ultimately secure required product development capex and resources.
- Establish and lead matrixed product development teams through the key design, development, trial and launch phases of taking new products/features to market. This will include working pan-Openreach with representatives from service, operations, systems and networks, as well leading any customer engagement activity.
- Ensure the product value proposition is understood by customers and the account teams. Ensure clear, compelling and up-to-date product documentation is in place.
- Manage product withdrawals. Establish rationale for product withdrawal, undertake commercial impact assessments, make recommendations, secure stakeholder support and lead customer/industry engagement.
You'll have the following skills & experience
- Self-starter with the motivation and ability to learn fast and develop a deep commercial and technical understanding of the product and its value proposition, and so become a subject matter expert, able to lead investigations into in-life product issues and new product opportunities.
- Commercial analysis skills, able to conduct cost/benefit assessments, including the creation of excel models, and use this to make clear, evidence-based recommendations regarding potential product developments.
- Problem solver – motivated to make things better. Dig into issues/opportunities as they arise, conduct root cause analysis, identify solutions, agree best approach to resolve/exploit.
- Strong communicator/influencer – both verbal and written. Able to clearly set out recommendations, and convince customers and stakeholders to gain support. Able to summarise succinctly yet dive into detail where required. Able to collaborate effectively and build enthusiasm and momentum across virtual teams.
