Our technology teams in the UK work closely with HSBC’s global businesses to help design and build digital services that allow our millions of customers around the world, to bank quickly, simply and securely. We also run and manage our IT infrastructure, data centres and core banking systems that power the world’s leading international bank.

Our multi-disciplined teams include: DevOps engineers, IT architects, front and back end developers, infrastructure specialists, cyber experts, as well as project and programme managers. 

 

Role Description:

The Technical Lead Engineer is pivotal in this structure; they will lead, grow and be the main technologist within one of these Agile teams. Working directly with a group of 5-13 engineers of varying skill sets and seniority, partnering with the scrum master and product owner to collectively delivery robust and highly performant Products. They will have support and collaborative input from the SVS Principal Engineer and Architects to ensure we drive forward HSBC’s 5-year technology strategy - speed, scale, resilience and people.

We work across a wide breadth of varying technologies depending on the team and product vision. Including industry standard and those specific to HSBC, some of the tech you can expect to see here is;

  • Public Cloud (AWS, GCP, Terraform)
  • Containerisation (Kubernetes, Docker)
  • Core Programming (Java, Python, Groovy etc)
  • Vendor Apps (Jira, Splunk, Jenkins, AppDynamics etc)

 

This is a hands-on role that can have a substantial focus on people and team management (as required). We see the core responsibilities of this role being across team and technical leadership, stakeholder management, customer engagement and operational excellence. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the team of engineers to understand, develop and run the defined set of technical products and solutions within Engineering Foundation, across all technical touchpoints.
  • Encourage collaboration between the Engineers, Scrum Master and Product Owners to define the scope, planning and prioritisation of work to deliver to desired value.
  • Support the engineering team as the point of escalation for any technical impediments and remove blockers.
  • Ensure all technical solutions produced by the team have high coding standards, easily maintainability, robust and deliver against the defined business outcomes.
  • To make sure all solutions meet the required, regulatory, governance, compliance, cyber and architectural patterns whilst using the best approved technology stack.
  • Mature technical development processes, high levels of automation and confirm any available updates for tooling and environments are deployed.
  • Ensure all technical work is appropriately estimated and prioritised including operational enhancements and technical debt, in collaboration with product owners and scrum masters.
  • Liaise with SVS Leadership across Tech, Product and Delivery disciplines to demonstrate predicable delivery of technology solutions that are aligned to their outcomes, Objectives and Key Results (OKRs)
  • Ensure that the teams’ responsibilities are met, including performance/delegating service ownership, QA process, release management, incident, and problem management.
  • Manage and deliver a high level of operational support of the teams’ products to ensure appropriate robustness and customer satisfaction.

 

Requirements

Experience:

  • Relevant technical knowledge and experience in some of the tech stack above.
  • Experience working in a regulated environment and understanding of risk and compliance.
  • Strong experience leading technical Agile teams at scale within a software and DevOps environment.
  • Appreciation of product methodologies and ability to interact successfully with senior stakeholders along with strong communication and people management skills.
  • Excellent leadership skills and entrepreneurial nature, to help drive change and transformation across the engineering teams and HSBC as a whole.
  • Great communication - convey your thoughts, ideas and opinions clearly and concisely face-to-face or virtually to all levels up and down stream
  • Be flexible under pressure
  • Be comfortable working within an agile, multidisciplinary team.

 

The role will be based in London but some travel may be required. We adopt a hybrid working model.
